Superintendent Jim Frey on the behalf of the Lynden School District was presented an Excellence in School Safety award last night at the Lynden School Board meeting. The award was presented by the Sheriff’s Office Division of Emergency Management for the District’s efforts at engaging with the City of Lynden to enhance the emergency protocols the School District follows.
Division of Emergency Management Deputy Director Kent Catlin stated, “the exercise is timely in that the District does face safety concerns with some of its aging utilities infrastructure in the schools. The scenario for our table top involved a boiler room explosion. Just this week Sehome High School had an incident with a transformer exploding. The majority of schools are dealing with buildings that have antiquated heating systems, or were not designed to handle the electrical demands that are now placed upon them with the dawn of the “information age” and the IT wiring that supports that technology.”.
