Lightning Storm Hits Bellingham and Whatcom County

A strong thunder and lightning storm passing through Bellingham and Whatcom County this evening has caused multiple power outages and fires.  First responders are actively fighting fires and dispatchers are receiving multiple calls regarding the storm.  Please only call 9-1-1 to report a life-threatening incident or a fire.

Stay safe!  Do not go outdoors during lightning and thunderstorms.   A sturdy building is the safest place to be during a thunderstorm. NO PLACE outside is safe when thunderstorms are in the area!

  • If you hear thunder, lightning is close enough to strike you.
  • When you hear thunder, immediately move to safe shelter: a substantial building with electricity or plumbing or an enclosed, metal-topped vehicle with windows up.
  • Stay in safe shelter at least 30 minutes after you hear the last sound of thunder.
