Happy Holidays from DEM/WUEM

We wish you and yours all the best as this year comes to an end. As we look back on this year, your friendly neighborhood emergency management team has been busy. The Sheriff’s Office Division of Emergency Management and Whatcom Unified Emergency Management has gained much ground in 2012-13. Some of these highlights include:

  1.  The response to the I-5 bridge collapse.
  2. The response to the December 2012 tidal flooding disaster.
  3.  The establishment of a new 24,000 odd foot emergency operations center.
  4.  State acceptance of our updated Tsunami mapping project with Birch Bay, the comprehensive Emergency Management Plan, and the Hazardous Materials Plan for the County.
  5.  Acceptance of a county-wide, law enforcement endorsed School Safety Planning Guide, and development of a comprehensive school safety program for local districts to participate in.
  6. Completion of the DEM/ WUEM updated website.
  7. Establishment of Community Points of Distribution sites across the County and the City of Bellingham.
  8. Facilitating the renewed participation from chemical users/ producers in collaborating with first responders, and participation in supporting the Whatcom Emergency Joint Coordination Center/ EOC project.
  9. Improved cross training/ and exercising with Tribal Emergency Management.
  10.  Execution of two ICS 300/400 courses, seven exercises including drills, table tops and one functional. Some of these being provided for the cities of Lynden, Ferndale, the Whatcom Transit Authority as well as the Community Organizations Assisting in Disasters (COAD).

Despite being decimated by staff reductions, and the challenge of tough economic times, we will strive to keep the gains we have made this year.

All the best to you in 2014,

Your DEM / WUEM Staff
