Mount BakerVolcano

Whatcom County has an active volcano in its back yard. Mount Baker's last eruption was in 1870. Periodically it shows that it is still active by blowing plumes of steam. During an eruption Mount Baker's dangers include the blast, lava flow, ash fall and debris flows. All this in an area known as a destination for outdoor recreation.

Before a Volcanic Eruption

  • Store emergency supplies, food and water
  • Plan an evacuation route away from rivers that may carry mud flow
  • If an eruption is predicted, monitor news for evacuation information
  • Follow advice given by authorities regarding evacuation

During a Volcanic Eruption

  • Do not approach the eruption area (duh)
  • Move toward high ground if mudflows are approaching
  • Follow evacuation signs posted along roads and highways

After a Volcanic Eruption

  • Protect your lungs from ash exposure
  • Listen to the news for reports of damaged areas and avoid them
  • Keep your rooftop free of ash deeper than four inches
  • Minimize travel - ash is harmful to your vehicle
