Part of living in Whatcom County includes experiencing severe storms. Every year we can expect:

  • High winds
  • Heavy rain
  • Freezing temperatures
  • Lots of snow
  • Any combination of the above

Before a Storm

  • Make or update your emergency kit
  • If you have a generator, check operation and fuel supply
  • Identify trees on your property that could likely fall in a storm
  • Find your flashlights and extra batteries
  • Make sure you have enough food for several days
  • Put tire chains in your vehicle if you plan on driving

During a Storm

  • Avoid driving if possible
  • Never use a generator indoors
  • Do not use gas or charcoal barbeques indoors
  • If the power goes out, keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed as much as possible to keep food cold

After a Storm

  • Evacuate damaged buildings
  • If you smell gas or hear hissing indoors, open windows and leave the building Turn off gas at the source and call your gas company
  • Use caution when driving - roads may be icy or have debris
