Severe Storm
Part of living in Whatcom County includes experiencing severe storms. Every year we can expect:
- High winds
- Heavy rain
- Freezing temperatures
- Lots of snow
- Any combination of the above
Before a Storm
- Make or update your emergency kit
- If you have a generator, check operation and fuel supply
- Identify trees on your property that could likely fall in a storm
- Find your flashlights and extra batteries
- Make sure you have enough food for several days
- Put tire chains in your vehicle if you plan on driving
During a Storm
- Avoid driving if possible
- Never use a generator indoors
- Do not use gas or charcoal barbeques indoors
- If the power goes out, keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed as much as possible to keep food cold
After a Storm
- Evacuate damaged buildings
- If you smell gas or hear hissing indoors, open windows and leave the building Turn off gas at the source and call your gas company
- Use caution when driving - roads may be icy or have debris
