Landslide
Do you know if you live an an area susceptible to landslides? Several locations throughout our county have geographic features called alluvial fans. These areas are prone to landslides, a potentially destructive geological event. Curious about your house? Whatcom County Public Works has a map that identifies the alluvial fans in our county.
Before a landslide
If you live in an area that has a potential for landslides:
- Make sure your insurance will cover landslide damage
- Plant ground cover to stabilize the land
- Consider building retaining walls if appropriate
- Make evacuation plans
During a landslide
If inside a building:
- Stay inside
- Take cover under a desk, table or other sturdy furniture
If outdoors:
- Head for high ground away from the path of the landslide
- If debris is approaching, run for shelter - a building or group of trees
- If escape is not possible, curl into a ball and protect your head
After a landslide
- Stay away from slide area
- Check for injured people - give first aid
- Check buildings for damage
- Replant damaged ground to prevent erosion
