Flood
The geography of Whatcom County includes several flood-prone regions. The Nooksack River, flat lowland areas and property with saltwater exposure all can experience flooding. There are some things you can do before, during and after a flood to be prepared and safe.
Before a Flood
- Make an evacuation plan
- Purchase flood insurance
- Prepare your home - get sandbags, elevate valuables
- Check the radio, TV or web for flood reports
During a Flood
- Do not walk or drive through flooded areas - water can be deper than it appears
- Stay away from moving water - just six inches of moving water can sweep you off your feet
- If your home is flooded, turn off the utilities
- Avoid weakened floors, walls and rooftops
- Wash your hands frequently if you come in contact with floodwaters
After a Flood
- Wear gloves and boots when cleaning up
- Discard all food that has come into contact with floodwater
- Verify that tap water is safe to drink
- When floodwaters have receded, watch out for weakened road surfaces
