Flooded YardFlood

The geography of Whatcom County includes several flood-prone regions. The Nooksack River, flat lowland areas and property with saltwater exposure all can experience flooding. There are some things you can do before, during and after a flood to be prepared and safe.

Before a Flood

  • Make an evacuation plan
  • Purchase flood insurance
  • Prepare your home - get sandbags, elevate valuables
  • Check the radio, TV or web for flood reports

During a Flood

  • Do not walk or drive through flooded areas - water can be deper than it appears
  • Stay away from moving water - just six inches of moving water can sweep you off your feet
  • If your home is flooded, turn off the utilities
  • Avoid weakened floors, walls and rooftops
  • Wash your hands frequently if you come in contact with floodwaters

After a Flood

  • Wear gloves and boots when cleaning up
  • Discard all food that has come into contact with floodwater
  • Verify that tap water is safe to drink
  • When floodwaters have receded, watch out for weakened road surfaces
