Before an Earthquake
- Anchor appliances and furniture that might fall
- Secure your water heater
- Build an emergency kit.
During an Earthquake
- If you are indoors, stay inside. Move under a desk or sturdy table and hold on to it. Stay away from windows, and any furniture or appliances that could fall over.
- If you are outdoors, move to a clear area away from buildings, trees, signs or downed electrical wires and poles.
- If you are in a downtown area, get into a building's doorway to protect yourself from falling debris.
- If you are driving, slowly pull over and stop. Avoid bridges, power lines and other hazards.
After an Earthquake
- Only enter buildings if you know it's safe
- Check yourself and those around you for injuries
- Be prepared for aftershocks
- If you smell gas or hear a hissing sound open a window and leave the building
