Nisqually EarthquakeEarthquake

Whatcom County is situated along the Cascadia Subduction Zone, a geological feature that is responsible for significant earthquakes in the region. Subduction zones are capable of generating earthquakes that can exceed magnitude 9.0.

Before an Earthquake

  • Anchor appliances and furniture that might fall
  • Secure your water heater
  • Build an emergency kit.

During an Earthquake

  • If you are indoors, stay inside. Move under a desk or sturdy table and hold on to it. Stay away from windows, and any furniture or appliances that could fall over.
  • If you are outdoors, move to a clear area away from buildings, trees, signs or downed electrical wires and poles.
  • If you are in a downtown area, get into a building's doorway to protect yourself from falling debris.
  • If you are driving, slowly pull over and stop. Avoid bridges, power lines and other hazards.

After an Earthquake

  • Only enter buildings if you know it's safe
  • Check yourself and those around you for injuries
  • Be prepared for aftershocks
  • If you smell gas or hear a hissing sound open a window and leave the building
